World War I sites.

  • Caverne des dragons. During the First World War, from early 1915 onwards, German troops invaded a stone quarry that had been exploited starting in the 16th century, on the Chemin des Dames in the Aisne Department. The cavern was more than just a makeshift shelter. In fact it quickly became a strategic military location.
  • Col du Linge battlefield. The LINGE is a first world war (1914 - 1918) battlefield, where one of the bloodiest confrontations of the war took place between July 20th and October 15th 1915, resulting 17000 deaths.
  • Bataille de la Somme. On 1 July 1916, their armies, relying in part on their colonial troops, launched the largest battle of the Great War in terms of the number of nationalities involved and number of casualties: one million persons wounded, dead or missing.
